Phrases in English
Noun Phrase
A noun phrase consists of a noun and any modifiers that further describe or identify it.
Example: The large brown dog – “The large brown” describes the noun “dog”.
Verb Phrase
A verb phrase includes a main verb and its auxiliary (helping) verbs or modals.
Example: She has been studying – “Has been studying” is the verb phrase.
Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun.
Example: At the top of the mountain – “At the top of” is the prepositional phrase.
Adjective Phrase
An adjective phrase modifies a noun or pronoun by describing or qualifying it.
Example: A book with a beautiful cover – “With a beautiful cover” is the adjective phrase.
Adverbial Phrase
An adverbial phrase modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb and provides additional information.
Example: With great care and precision – “With great care and precision” is the adverbial phrase.
